About Coral Futures

About
"We believe that earning trust comes before asking for it. So we built the facility first."
OUR BEGINNING

We Did Not Wait for Funding to Start.

Coral Futures Research & Innovation Centre was founded in Somerset in 2026, built on a simple conviction: meaningful reef conservation demands more than good intentions. It demands rigour, honesty and the willingness to do the hard preparatory work before making promises.

So before we launched a public campaign, before we applied for a single grant, our founding directors did something straightforward: they opened their own wallets. Nearly £15,000 in personal funds — invested as zero-interest loans to the organisation — became the propagation tanks, quarantine systems, acclimation equipment and monitoring infrastructure that form our research facility today.

That facility is now operational. Living coral colonies are in our tanks. Water chemistry is monitored daily. Propagation protocols are being developed and documented. We built it before we asked you to believe in us.

Community-centred
Science-led
OUR MISSION

Science, Education and Community — All Three Together.

Our mission is to protect coral reef ecosystems through science-led research, open community education and genuine collaboration with the people and places around us.

We work in three interlocking ways. First, we research: our propagation and quarantine facility in Somerset lets us study coral biology, develop acclimation protocols and build the evidence base that responsible conservation depends on. Second, we educate: we bring free coral science directly to local schools and community venues across South Somerset — events and workshops that require nothing from participants except curiosity. Third, we connect: we involve local people — students, families, volunteers, community groups — as genuine participants in our work, not bystanders to it.

The reef crisis is global. Our response begins at home, in the communities around us, because lasting conservation is always local before it is international.

WHAT WE DO

Four Things That Make Coral Futures Work

We propagate and study coral

Living coral colonies in monitored, controlled tank systems — developing the husbandry knowledge that real conservation requires.

We go to schools and communities — free

We deliver free interactive coral science events to local schools and community venues across South Somerset. No cost. No prerequisites. Science for everyone.

We document and share openly

Every protocol we develop is written up, reviewed and intended for open publication — so that what we learn in Somerset can benefit anyone in coral conservation.

We involve real people

Students, volunteers and community groups are active participants in our work — not audiences for it. We consult before we design and involve before we deliver.
