Why Coral Reefs Matter

Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean, yet support over 25% of all marine life.

They protect coastlines from storms, sustain fisheries that feed hundreds of millions of people, and contribute billions to the global economy through tourism, food security, and biodiversity. Despite their importance, reefs are among the world’s most threatened ecosystems.

Coral Futures exists to change this trajectory—turning research, innovation, and ethical coral aquaculture into practical solutions that protect and restore reefs. Together, we can build a future where coral ecosystems not only survive but thrive.

🌊 Our First Goal: £25,000

Help us launch the first phase of the Coral Futures Conservation & Education Programme.

Your support will help us:

  • build our starter coral conservation systems

  • care for our first coral fragments

  • create education resources for schools

  • prepare the foundation for our research lab

Every donation — big or small — moves us closer to protecting vulnerable coral species and inspiring the next generation of ocean guardians.

Together, we can build something extraordinary.

Mission

Born from over a decade of hands-on coral husbandry and a passion for marine conservation,

we’re building a new model for reef restoration — one that brings coral science out of the tropics and into reach of the public.

We develop pioneering coral propagation systems, mobile off-grid nurseries, and resilience-focused research projects designed to protect corals in an age of climate change. At the same time, we engage people of all ages — from students to citizen scientists — to become part of the solution.

Flagship Project

Mobile Coral Nurseries – Conservation on the Move

One of our most innovative projects is the development of mobile, off-grid coral nurseries. These self-contained units are designed to be deployed in strategic locations where endangered coral reefs are most at risk. Powered by renewable energy and equipped with advanced life-support systems, our mobile nurseries can operate independently in remote regions.

Because they are modular and transportable, they provide an agile conservation tool—allowing us to respond quickly to reef emergencies, support local restoration programmes, and establish coral stocks directly where they are needed most. These nurseries also serve as field-based research and training hubs, enabling collaboration with local communities, students, and scientists on-site.

By bringing coral farming technology directly to vulnerable reef areas, Coral Futures is making conservation flexible, scalable, and accessible, ensuring that urgent action can be taken wherever reefs need us most.

Words That Inspire Action for Reefs

The coral reefs, the rain forest of the ocean, are home for one-third of the species of the sea. Coral reefs are under stress for several reasons… each of these pressures is bad enough in itself, but together, the cocktail is proving lethal

James Hansen American Climatologist

Coral reefs represent some of the world’s most spectacular beauty spots, but they are also the foundation of marine life: without them many of the sea’s most exquisite species will not survive.

Sheherazade Goldsmith British Environmentalist

The greatest danger to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.
